everything you need to know about the blood moon

A blood moon occurs when the moon is located between the sun and the earth in a perfectly straight line, and the blood moon does not happen except on the full moon.

For the blood moon phenomenon to occur, the three bodies (the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon) must line up in a unified straight line, In the case of the blood moon, the moon moves in the shadow of the earth.

what is the blood moon:

In a normal situation, the moon is in the earth's orbit and does 12 cycles annually. Each cycle has a duration of one lunar month, and its duration is 29.5 days. Therefore, the lunar month is either 29 or 30 days, and the earth is in the orbit of the sun, where it performs a complete cycle every 365 days, But during a blood moon, the Earth cuts off direct sunlight from the moon.

why is the moon color is red?

The term blood moon refers to the moon when its color changes to dark red with a little brown, the red color is because of the earth looking at the light of the sun from the moon The only color remains the lunar color, which gives it the red character.

“Because it is happening at such a comfortable time, I would suggest trying to observe it from the beginning to the end,”

Dr. Guhathakurta

she adds that a home telescope helps to see a display of the red color and a closer view of the details of the blood moon,  NASA will male a live broadcast on its official website of the lunar eclipse phenomenon.

What do you expect to see?

The total phase of the eclipse will be approximately 27 minutes long, and we will watch the moon turn dark as a result of the appearance of its true color in the blood moon. Its true color begins in the moon’s dust, which tends to be a dark red color.

The history of the blood moon:

A total lunar eclipse occurred on April 15, 2014, the first of four successive total eclipses known as a tetrad; the second occurred on October 8, 2014, the third on April 4, 2015, and the fourth on September 28, 2015. It is the second of eight tetrads that will take place in the twenty-first century. The moon glowed crimson on April 15, 2014, as it does during most lunar eclipses. Rayleigh's scattering of sunlight through the Earth's atmosphere generates the red hue, which is the same phenomenon that causes sunsets to seem red.

"The sun will turn to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awful day of the Lord comes," says Joel in the Book of Joel. This prophecy was repeated by Peter on Pentecost, according to Acts, albeit Peter claims that the fulfillment of Joel's prophecy occurred on Pentecost, not at a later date. "And I beheld after he had broken the sixth seal, and lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became like blood," says verse 12 of the Book of Revelation chapter 6 verses 11–13.

blood moon and religions:

in Christianity:

  • “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord,” – Joel 2:31
  • “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and notable day of the Lord.” – Acts 2:20
According to the Bible, it is a sign of the end, and what increases the faith of Christians in these verses is the tense situation around the world, especially with the recent Russian-Ukrainian war and the tension prevailing in the world about the third world war.

In Islam :

  • The Messenger of God, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “The sun and the moon are two of the signs of God. They do not eclipse because of someone’s death or life, so if you see them, then pray to God and pray until it clears.”

Muslims pray and supplicate during solar and lunar eclipses, and there was once a lot of fear and superstition about what the blood moon might cause, and many believed that it was a sign of impending disaster, and there was a solar eclipse when Abraham, peace be upon him, and the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, died. Some speculated that the sun had dimmed due to melancholy.

Is looking at the blood moon safe?

According to many optometrists, looking at a lunar eclipse will not be harmful because the moon does not send harmful rays to the eye, unlike the solar eclipse, which sends ultraviolet rays that would cause severe damage to the eye when exposed to it for long periods.

The difference between a solar eclipse and a lunar eclipse:

  • A solar eclipse happens when the sun, moon, and Earth all line up in a straight line, whereas a lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the sun and the moon.
  • A solar eclipse happens two or three times each year on average, and a lunar eclipse happens three times per year on average.
  • A solar eclipse can last for several minutes, but a lunar eclipse can endure for many hours.
  • A solar eclipse is a harmful phenomenon for the eyes and requires protection, but a lunar eclipse is a harmless phenomenon for the eyes and does not.
  • A lunar eclipse can only happen when the moon is full in the middle of the Arab month, and when the moon is set at the beginning of the Arab month.
